Introduction

The MiNDSTEp campaign is using the Danish 1.5m telescope at ESO La Silla to monitor microlensing events in the direction of the Galactic bulge. One of the additional projects of this campaign is to obtain high-precision light curves of transiting extrasolar planetary systems. Our approach is to defocus the telescope and spread the PSF over roughly 100-1000 pixels, allowing us to achieve extremely low random and systematic noise levels. The transit light curves are analysed to measure the mass, radius and other physical properties of the planet and its host star. The organiser of this project is John Southworth. For more information please see the MiNDSTEp homepage and new wiki page from Jesper.

We are now into the 2025 MiNDSTEp observing season. Some details of past transits (both observed and not observed) can be found here: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

John Southworth's Transiting Extrasolar Planets Catalogue (TEPCat) can be accessed here.

Finder charts

Finder charts have been generated for each target. In each case the base image comes from ESO's DSS2 (red) photographic sky survey and is 25×25 arcmin. The specific area of sky to be observed is highlighted, and the variable and comparison stars are labelled with V and Cn.

If you have problems windowing the CCD (e.g. if you are operating remotely and the connection is slow) then just use the whole CCD. This is OK because the CCD readout is pretty fast.

Update since 2021: choose the orientation of the finder chart depending on which side of the pier the telescope is. My understanding is:
Main mode (east of the pier): use the rotate 270 chart
Rev mode (west of the pier): use the rotate 90 chart

Sending the data

Since the 2015 season all DFOSC data are automatically archived on the Czech server, from which they can be retrieved via sftp. Please make sure the fits files are appropriately labelled (e.g. include the target name, or "flat" with the filter used, or "bias" etc) so they can be easily identified in the archive. Please also send a notification email to taylorsouthworth@gmail.com saying what has been done. Many thanks!

Example fits files and reduced data from the 2008 and 2009 observing seasons

WASP-5:   Transits of WASP-5 were observed on the nights of 2008/08/28 and 2008/09/20. Please note that these were obtained with different CCD window parameters than recommended for the current observing season.   In-focus images: JPG (523KB) and gzipped FITS (1.5MB).   Defocussed images: JPG (599KB) and gzipped FITS (1.8MB).   Surface plot of the PSF (259KB).   Plot of the final light curve in the paper (68KB).

WASP-4:   Four transits of WASP-4 were observed during 2008 August to September. Note that these were obtained with different CCD window parameters than recommended for the current observing season.   In-focus images: JPG (509KB) and gzipped FITS (1.2MB).   Defocussed images: JPG (267KB) and gzipped FITS (1.5MB).   Plot of the four individual transit observations (109KB).   Plot of the final light curve in the paper (79KB).

WASP-18: this is difficult because it is so bright and has few comparison stars. Due to this we used the V-filter and shorter exposure times (80s) in the 2009 season. An example observation can be found here: gzipped fits file (2.7MB) and JPG image (0.4MB). Note that the window covers quite a large part of the CCD in order to get a good comparison star (bottom left), as well as WASP-18 (top right) carefully positioned between two columns of bad pixels.
