Preliminary photometry done? (y/n): no.
Observers Name: Jesper Skottfelt and Kennet Harpse
Data: stored on HD at La Silla.
Observing condition: Clear sky, Low wind but it increased to 8 m/s at the end of the night (NE), seeing ~1, low pressure, temperature ~ 10 degC.
Additional info: Calibration frames, DFOSC: bias and flat (VRI). LI: bias and flat. Focus: LI: 15385 (Serrurier temp 9.7 degC). Targets: OmegaCen (for photometric test of LI camera) and GJ-1214 (using LI cam). We switched to the EMCCD cameras before the observations, so it is now the new camera (the one Kennet brought) that is installed.
Night report email: 30. April 2011, by Skottfelt.

Transit Observed: Yes. Preliminary light-curve: Yes, click here Night report: missing. Observers: Jesper Skottfelt and Davide Ricci. Notes on preliminary data analysis: First three images in focus. Remaining images are defocused with texp=120s, R and telfocus=15957. Images 02:29:44 to 02:48:39 are different probably due to the filter has not been in place properly. However, they have been included into the above light curve which considers images 02:29:44 to 08:07:36. Images 08:10:18 to 08:46:05 discarded in order to generate the above lightcurves. They were discarded due to clouds. The large scatter of data point at second half is most probably due to clouds. Very unfortunate!! Above fit (affected by the large scatter) is based on a linear detrending with comparison star 2,3 from the finder chart.

Transit observed: yes.
Observers: Skottfelt, Ricci
Conditions:temperature : ~12.0 C, seeing: 1.0 - 3.0 arcsec, humidity: 10 - 20%, wind:~14-18 m/s NE, calibration frames DFOSC: 1) dome flats (VRI) 2) bias frames (25), calibration frames LuckyCam: 1) dome flats 2) bias frames. Focus at the beginning of the observations: 15430 on the LuckyCam.
Observations: started at 4:50 (ingress -1h), spooled ~4000 in focus frames, gain=300, low framerate in very bad conditions in terms of wind and clouds. Stopped at 6:03 (midpoint -15') due to the strong wind.
Notes: Covered until 00:00 local time, 3:00 UT, then partially clouded until 7:00, then quite clear. The wind was all the night around the pointing limits, we checked the values on the meteo monitor and the noise in the dome during all the observations. At 6:00 UT we had to close.
Night report: Email from Ricci, May 7th 2011.

Night report for the night of 10th May 2011

We are experiencing a lot of problems with almost all the computers.
This kind of problems are similar to those happened on 2009/08/23.
when Gabriele maier and I (Davide) were observing.

We also tried to have DFOSC and LI bulge images with symmetric airmass to
see the behavior of the dispersion. Unfortunately, with the computer
problems, we cannot inspect it in real time.

######### notes ########## Around 3:00 UT, we experienced problems with almost all the computers at the same time: - TCS PC said: "Error: can't set "gvar(atelspeed) syntax error, couldn't set variable". We skipped the message and it apparently continued working without problems. "Telescope status: 15. We had lo log out and login in. - BIAS PC said: "Error 17" and froze while storing the full frame images of the asteroid 18 Melpomene. We had to restart the script several times. The tests with a full frame image froze all, while a test with a small frame was correctly processed. Then, the subsequent full frame images worked correctly. - MIDAS PC stopped converting the *.mt files into *.bdf files at the same time the BIAS PC froze. We could not use the procmissing.sh script because of a related problem on the STORAGE PC (see below). We converted one by one the *.mt files using the MIDAS command "INDISK dfsc5214.mt dfsc5214.bdf". - STORAGE PC stopped working, probably because of the same problem that we experienced some days ago: the machine drl9.ls.eso.org (134.171.81.179) is down, so we will have to call again Mr. Pizarro (beeper 43) who hopefully will call Paranal to resolve the problem.

Possible individual apertures for these stars is needed. Data on Lynx: WASP16-20110513.tar.gz Night report (13. May 2011): WASP-16 (DFOSC), 2 in-focus full frames at 15480, ~15C in R. 1 in-focus cropped frame as follow: xbegin: 470, ybegin: 570, xsize: 1000, ysize: 1000. Another in-focus cropped frame as follow: xbegin: 470, ybegin: 570, xsize: 1000, ysize: 900. 130 defocused frames at 15880 cropped like the last one. NB: it seems that C6 is a double star. temperature : 15.2 C at serrurier, seeing: 0.5-1.0 arcsec, humidity: 15%, wind: 5 m/s.
Note: We tried to spool 6000 frames of Quatar 2, but we had to abort to start the WASP-16 transit. The counter on the bottom was beyond 9000. and it did not stop after ~6000 as we expected. The abort command did not work and we had to kill the andorcommander. The spooled images weren't saved anywhere, apparently.

Report in Email from: May 14, 2011: In attachment you can compare the difference in performance between the LuckyCam and the DFOSC, on the events KB-11-0090 and KB-11-0116. We chose two particularly good frames per instrument. In addition, we remarked that the slope of the DFOSC KB-11-0090 is different from that of the LuckyCam one (see curve-0090.png) Have you any idea about this behavior? ######## dk1.54 m ######### # Date : 2011.05.14 # Observers : S. Due to the pointing limits, the object was visible only at the beginning of the Ingress.
Moreover, we had a lot of problems while trying to tune the focus and to point the
object. The finding chart was not flipped, and the target have a huge proper motion too
(~14 arcsec with respect to the finding chart).

Night report:

Dear Martin, Uffe, Tobias, John

the weather conditions are still being awful (strong wind, large
seeing, and after midnight, to complete the picture, clouds) - we
did go for the transit (could do just because opposite to the wind),
but I am unfortunately not confident at all on the good quality of
data.

Impossible to go for microlensing.

all the best

first defocused image: 00:18 UT (1 hour before ingress)
last defocused image: 03:55 UT (1 hour after egress)

Note:

to get to a reasonable number of counts on the target we looked quite a long time for
a trade-off between de-focus and exposure time - finally, we used texp=150 s, larger
than the suggested 120 s, still the result was not very satisfactory (the seeing was
already quite large, about 2"-2.5"), then, during the transit, because of the increase
of the seeing (up to ~4"), and the appearance of veils, the number of counts further
decreased.

Time checked with http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=1961, the UT of the
telescope is whithin 1 sec

impossible because of bad weather conditions

######### notes ##########

- still moving the images manually from MIDAS to STORAGE PC.

- telescope: "usual" problem with message: delta_pos_max_exceeded, we had to re-initialize.

- during the transit the TCS froze: we log out and log in without stopping observations.

Night report:

Dear Uffe, Martin et al

this night we have observed Qatar-3 for the full
indicated duration (clear sky, relatively strong wind,
in fact near the threshold limit for having to close the dome) -
hopefully we got the right strategy: finally we decided for a
focused time sequence of images, with exposure time
increasing from 15 sec, at the beginning, then 20 sec
and finally 25 sec

as it was anticipated, there are two nearby objects,
about 6" away (roughly 15 pixels on DFOSC):
it looked not feasible to carry out
precise enough photometry on both of them with any defocusing
(also because of the seeing conditions,
about 2" at start, then progressively down to 1.5"-1")

we are aware that the exposure time
is relatively short, but we looked for a safe value
to avoid saturation

(we are not expert on defocused photometry,
and may be a more reasonable trade-off could have been obtained -
on the other hand, given the adopted strategy,
and the overall length of the transit, it may make
sense to bin the data to increase S/N -
of course, knowing about this target in advance
we could have tried to optimize tonight's observation.....
anyway, we hope this may be useful at least for
the next transit to come)

a few details:
we started somewhat more than 1hr before ingress, at 02:10 UT,
but had to stop, because of both airmass and (east) pier costraints,
almost as soon afetr the egress, at 06:40 UT(and let's hope the ephemeris was
wrong on the right side!)

a side remark: we could get only two of the
suggested comparison stars (C1 and C6), but there
are a couple of others rather bright stars in the field
that hopefully may be used to this purpose

all the best

- the FindPos script to evaluate the offset for LI
does not seem to work as weel as it used to
it is often off by even 20",
this often delays considerably the flow of the images

- still moving the images manually from
MIDAS to STORAGE PC (I then have written a code and a script
(readhead && readhead.sh) to create, manually,
a log file on the STORAGE PC reading (through IRAF)
a few keywords from the headers,
hopefully, however, the normal flow of images from MIDAS
 may be reestablished soon)

| 23:10 | DFOSC | R | 10s | 11_Parthenope | Very bright neighbour, so only took
a handful of images. |
| 0:00 | LI | LI | varying | NGCs 5268, 5694, 5139 | These were test observations
for Matthews Globular Cluster project. We took different exposure times, to see what
works. For the more extended clusters, we found it quite impossible to recognise the
centre of the cluster. For 'little' 5694 it was easy and we used that one to re-point
the telescope and to re-calibrate FindPos. We printed out "finder charts" for each of
the objects, in order to be able to observe the same fields again. Pointing precision
could be a problem for this project.
|| 2:10 | DFOSC | R | 60 sec | GJ-1214 |We started preparing the transit as soon as
possible to point to it (@ HA -2:55) Defocussed by +170. Counts for the target were
quite low (~20.000 ADU max), but according to plan we did not increase the exposure
times. The brightest comparison star ("C5?") was saturated nonetheless. The windowing
parameters are actually saved in the FITS headers of all files (xbeg 945, ybeg 640,
xsize 885, ysize 1090). We did a timing check on one of the focussed images after the
transit and found it to match online clocks to within a second. Frame was 5571.mt and
shutter opening at 05:19:01 UT. |

---++ Comments:
* Xiang-Sund is taking some data out to rsync/ftp to Copenhagen.

* When the wind lessened in force (~ 8:00 UT), we wanted to continue ML observations,
but found that the TCS was extremely slow in responding. We tried multiple log-outs,
power-cycling the VME rack (on the dome floor), rebooting the TCS PC -- all to no
avail and all extremely tedious with long waits for the TCS to shut-down again in
between. We finally located the cause: the rsync from the Pipeline PC to Xiang-Sung's
external hard drive, which we could only mount on the Lucky PC, apparently clogged up
the internal network so much, that the TCS could not properly communicate with the VME
rack. We don't claim to understand it, we just noticed that stopping the rsync brought
the TCS back to normal working speed. For this reason, less data will be transported
  out than could have been.

* When we tried to continue with ML (~9:20 UT), we found, after focussing, that the
pointing was so much offset that we did not recognise the LI field at all. We moved the
telescope back by the usual initial offset (RA -170", Dec -40"), but still did not
recognise the field. The FindPos script was unfortunately no help as well, it showed
an offset of about RA 1900", Dec -1700" for the initial field and when we finally reduced
that to 0, the field was still not recognisable.

* At around 10:10 UT, we decided to spend our remaining energy resources on the night
report, and stopped the attempts to observe.

* CL would like to acknowledge Swiss-Spanish hospitality.

---++ Weather:
La Silla snow-covered. At the beginning of the night, there was still ice on the dome, so
we decided it was too risky to open (all other telescopes stay closed as well).

---++ Comments:
It is a pity that the ice prevented opening up, because after the humidity dropped, it was
a fine, clear winter night until the wind picked up again at 1 CLT to above 20m/s.

Hi all,

the night report is saved on the Twiki but presently we are (again) unable to access the Twiki.
So, no copy of the text with this email. We observed WASP-19 but partly through thin clouds.

---++ Comments:

* The TCS is clogged down when there is any network activity on the Lucky PC. Tonight, the

Transit prediction was based on a wrong (outdated ephemeris). An update for future observations
of HAT-P-27 has been done based on the Anderson et al. (2011) and Beky et al. (2011) papers.
Sorry for this!!

Transit observed? Yes. (data made available by Mikkel via dropbox!)
Preliminary light-curve: Yes, click here.
Fixed aperture, C2 was clipped from the window as it was saturated (again), linear detrending
using C1 and C3. First few images look a bit strange with some sort of gradient - possibly the
filter wheel was not in place? Image 2011-08-12T03-57-06.fit rejected because of satellite track
right over WASP target. Not sure if timing measurements were made. Possibly see night log.
