Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are those passing through their final stage of nuclear burning before they end their lives as inert white dwarfs. After exhausting the supply of hydrogen and helium in their core, stars in the mass range ∼ 0.6 to eight solar masses go through the AGB phase of evolution.
Recent research has focused on a few key areas which we would like to explore in depth in this Heraeus seminar:1) Mixing in AGB stellar interiors: stellar evolution, study of the physical processes affecting the mixing boundariesInterstellar pollution from AGB stars: observations, chemical evolution of the Galaxy and stellar clusters, the origin of the elements2) AGB stars as nuclear reaction laboratories: nuclear reaction rates as critical input for AGB modelling
