Rachel Smith
I am a post-doctoral research associate in Astrophysics
in the Physics department at Keele University.
Research interests
My research is focussed on debris discs . These discs of
asteroids and comets are believed to be the natural remnants of planet
formation. Most are detected through the creation of dust through
collisions or the destruction of comets. This dust is heated by the
starlight and can be viewed as thermal emission in the infrared to
sub-mm wavelength regimes. I am particularly interested in resolving
discs through direct imaging and interferometry, as the location and
structure of the dust emission can reveal clues to its creation, and
therefore the planet formation processes that created the parent
bodies.
