James Bamber was working on the red supergiant populations in nearby spiral and irregular galaxies, concentrating on their mass loss and dust production and their role as supernova progenitors (or progenitors of the progenitors of supernovae). He went observing already the second month into his PhD, with the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma. He was getting interesting results on M101. Unfortunately, he decided he preferred a different career, and accepted a job outside academia in financial modelling after less than a year of PhD research.
