Atefeh Javadi, at Alzahra University in Tehran, Iran, worked on infrared (UKIRT) observations of nearby spiral galaxy M33. The goal is to use pulsating red giants to infer the star formation history and gauge their feedback into the ISM. She spent three months at Keele, published her first paper, a second paper, and defended her thesis in January 2011 scoring 98%. My Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship provided funding for several mutual visits, and the RAS and Royal Society have awarded funding to continue the collaboration. Atefeh is now a senior postdoctoral researcher at the School of Astronomy at the Institute for Physics and Mathematics in Tehran.
