Public Outreach

I believe broadening and promoting the public understanding and participation of science to be extremely important and I try whenever possible to involve myself in such activities.

Spaceschool@Kent
I am heavily involved in SpaceSchool@Kent held annually at the School of Physical-Sciences, University of Kent where I act as a rocket consultant and have given multimedia lectures on 'A tour of the solar system' , 'Mars and the possibilities of life' and 'Extra-solar planets and the search for life'. See my Spaceschool page for more details.

Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition
In 2008 I took part in the prestigious Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition. I was involved in a collaboration between several Universities producing an exhibit titled "Is there anybody out there: Looking for new worlds" which explained the various Extrasolar planet research activities underway in the UK. The exhibit website can be found here.
International year of Astronomy 2009
As part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 celebrations, which mark 400 years since Galileo pointed his telescope to the heavens, I have given a series of talks on Extrasolar planets to local Canterbury schools.
I have also been involved in a school telescope project led by Carole Haswell of the Open University. We visited a secondary school in Bedfordshire and helped 130 students each build their own telescope and shared our personal experiences of life as astronomers.
Kent SEPnet Astrodome
During 2009 I helped develop the Kent SEPnet Astrodome at the School of Physical-Sciences at the University of Kent. The astrodome is a 5m diameter state of the art mobile digital planetarium supplied by Discovery Dome. The astrodome is portable and can be taken out to local schools to give students a fully-immersive cinema experience of modern astronomy and hopefully inspire the scientists of tomorrow.
The Astrodome was launched by the University Vice Chancellor at a ceremony on the 25th June 2009. Students from St. Stephen's primary school attended the ceremony and received the innaugural talk.
If you are interested in booking an Astrodome talk please see the SPS Outreach pages.
